Do you frequently visit movie rating sites to see what’s good to watch? I use a streaming service that provides ratings for movies, but I still look up movies occasionally on multiple sites, especially if I’m wanting more information about the plot. I am a movie buff after all.
What I find interesting, however, is that I am often in disagreement with the ratings for different movies. Of course, I’m also often in agreement as well. The reason for this is everyone likes different types of movies and has a different set of expectations. I’m not always going to agree with the average rating based on what everyone else thinks.
What has stood out to me the most is the ratings for some of the horror movies that I watch. Now, these traditionally get low ratings when people are critical, and I definitely don’t like them all. Still, I have enjoyed many movies that I felt were good, while the rating for them wasn’t good at all.
Some of the childhood movies I watched and loved weren’t given very good ratings. Let me explain. I’m not talking about Lion King here. I’m talking about movies like Nothing But Trouble, Flight of the Intruder, etc. When you grow up with certain movies, you like them and even memorize them, thinking they’re some of the best movies in the world. Of course that happens to most people that like movies growing up, and the movies that they once liked so much sometimes don’t stack up so well against the critically acclaimed movies out there.
Rotten Tomatoes is one of the movie rating sites that people pay attention to quite often. I have to say that it does get my attention as well. It’s not that I don’t use those sites, it’s just that I also have my own opinion of course, just like everyone else. I’ll use a rating site as a good indicator of what to expect, but if I want to go ahead and watch a movie, I do. If it’s better than the rating in my opinion, then I am pleasantly surprised.
What movies have you liked that weren’t rated very well by others? Many rating sites are based on what a collection of registered users think, but then there are those rating sites that only give you what the critics think, too. I would rather base my judgment call on user reviews, not what the critics say.
